Many know him from Tesla and SpaceX, but the legend of Elon Musk started much sooner than that.
Elon Reeve Musk was born on June 28th, 1971 in South Africa. He was always described as introverted and someone who kept to himself. He was so quiet that his mother once believed he was deaf because he rarely ever spoke. Growing up wasn't easy for Musk as his parents divorced when he was 10 and he was often bullied in school. He faced a lot of adversity not only from being beat up in school, but from his home life, which he described as awful.
His escape from all the noise was technology and his intelligence. When he was just 10 he wrote code for a video game on a basic computer that he then sold for $500. The very beginning for the legendary entrepreneur. Fast forward 7 years to when Musk was a teenager at the age of 17. He moved to Canada to live with his mother to avoid his father and having to serve in the South African military.
After doing two years at Queen's University in Ontario, Musk transferred to University of Pennsylvania where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Physics while also obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Wharton School. He would then move to California to get his PhD at Stanford, but dropped out 2 days into the program to pursue his dreams of starting his own company.
Show Me The Money:
People often think that Musk originally made his fortune from Tesla and SpaceX, but he didn't. He skyrocketed to wealth much sooner than that. When he dropped out of Stanford he started his own company 'Zip2 Corporation'. This was a computer software company that helped newspapers design online city guides. He then sold the company for $307 million in cash and $34 million in stock options. Musk wasn't about to call it a day after that. He then went on to co-found X.com, which we now know as Paypal. Paypal was later acquired by Yahoo for $1.5 billion in stock, which provided Musk more fortune to his already growing net worth. After all this went down, he then went on to start SpaceX and Tesla.
Times weren't always easy for Elon Musk, but he never made excuses. He simply knew his capabilities and acted on them. Who knows, maybe you could be an Elon Musk waiting to happen.
